Athletics Engagement and Academic Report: Spring 2019

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—At the conclusion of the semester, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Director of Athletics Matt Richards published the findings of the semi-annual Spring 2019 Athletics Engagement and Academic Report. The report shows student-athlete GPAs and retention rates based on United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) normal progress rules for athletic participation eligibility.

  • Spring 2019: total student-athletes 90 (1 less than spring 2018).
  • Spring 2019: overall student-athlete GPA 2.71 (.05 points better than fall 2018).
  • Spring 2019: 86 percent of student-athletes completed retention standards as set by *USCAA Eligibility Guidelines. Students who did not meet these standards are in many cases still attending SMCC.
  • Spring 2019: 39 student-athletes (or 43 percent of participating student-athletes and one percent better than fall 2018) earned a GPA of 3.0 or better.

*USCAA Eligibility Guidelines for participation is defined as:

1. Meeting Normal Progress standards of credit load completion of 24 credit hours during two terms of attendance.
2. Meeting GPA sliding scale standards based on credit loads completed.

Other interesting notes based on the 2018-19 academic year:

  • 9 student-athletes were named USCAA Academic All-Americans (3.5 GPA or better after 24 credit hours).
  • Softball Team GPA 3.22; Women’s Soccer Team GPA 3.08.
  • Student-athletes were enrolled in 1,256 total credit hours.
  • Average attempted credit load for student-athletes this semester was 13.5 hours.

SMCC Athletics is proud of these efforts made by student-athletes who are enrolled in a full-time course load in addition to meeting the demands of their athletic schedules. Thank you to all coaches and support staff who serve as mentors to our student-athletes on and off the playing surface.
