SeaWolves Handed First L, Battered By Bridgton 16-5

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team suffered its first loss of the fall schedule, downed 16-5 by the Wolverines from Bridgton Academy on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

The Wolverines were able to get the bats going early, scoring in each of the first three innings and putting the home team in a 6-0 hole. Bridgton held an 8-0 advantage before the SeaWolves tacked on one in the sixth by way of a RBI ground-out from first-year Juan Subervi (Lynn, Mass.).

Bridgton used five hits to score five runs in the seventh before the SMCC bats came alive for four in the bottom half of the inning—Subervi connecting for another two RBIs. The Wolverines pushed two more across in the top of the eighth to secure the 11-run victory.

Junior captain Colby Gunter (Nashua, N.H.) logged the only multi-hit game for the home team—featuring a double. Sophomore captain Steven Ross (Quincy, Mass.) collected an RBI and sophomore Alexander Miller (Brandon, Fl.) made his mark with a three-bagger in the sixth.

SMCC used five pitchers in the contest, but it was first-year Brayden Bartlett (Denmark, Maine) who suffered the loss. The Bridgton starter C. Perry threw six innings and struck out seven to pick up the victory.

The action continues this weekend when the SeaWolves host a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) round-robin and play five games in two days spanning Sept. 21-22. SMCC is scheduled to play Great Bay Community College, Central Maine Community College, NHTI, and Holyoke Community College—all seven inning games.
