SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team captured its tenth win of the fall season in a 10-2 drubbing of the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Wednesday, Sept. 15.
First-year Brayden Bartlett (Denmark, Maine) made his first start on the hill for the SeaWolves going 3.0 innings and surrendering two earned runs. Sophomore Cole Lawrence (Pittston, Maine) came on in relief and dominated in a 4.0 inning, one-hit performance. First-years Tyler Mitchell (Somerset, Mass.) and Jake Sullivan (Weymouth, Mass.) both contributed with scoreless inning appearances.
The SeaWolves put two on the board in the second on a Jayco Pena (Salem, Mass.) 2-RBI single. Central Maine evened the score in their next at-bats before the SMCC offense posted five in the bottom of the fourth. The SeaWolves tacked on single runs in the fifth, seventh, and eighth to amass nine hits on the day.
Pena was a perfect 4-4 from the dish and sophomore captain Peter Stauber (Cumberland, Maine) recorded a 2-3 day, driving in two and scoring one himself. First-year Juan Subervi (Lynn, Mass.) connected for his 15th and 16th RBIs of the fall and Joshua Paisley (Portland, Maine) his 19th.
Lawrence picked up his second win of the season; CMCC's Cameron Godbois allowed seven runs over 4.0 innings and suffered the loss.
In a post-game interview, Head Coach Dave Walsh stated, "Any phase of our game can win a ball game for us. Whether we need a pick-me-up from our offense, a big play from the defense, or a dominate inning from our bullpen, we are getting it. This weekend will be a good test for our guys—getting exposure to NCAA division 2 baseball."
SMCC moves through its fall schedule sporting a 10-1 overall record and will get an exhibition doubleheader at NCAA D2 American International College on Sunday, Sept. 29. Game times are scheduled for 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. in Springfield, Mass.
