AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team won both its exhibition and non-conference games at the annual Can Am Tournament hosted by Central Maine Community College last weekend Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27.
Roxbury Community College (Exhibition): W, 80-48 | BOX
Four landed in double figures for the SeaWolves, but it was sophomore captain Ian Regan (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) who led the way with 14 points and two triples. The off-guard added six boards and three steals in 20 minutes on the floor. First-years Clay Hardy (Saginaw, Mich.) and Pedro Fonseca (Portland, Maine) netted 12 followed by first-year Marios Tsielos (Tripoli, Greece) who finished four of five chances from the floor for 11 points.
Roxbury's Melvin Worley led his team with 10 points spanning 25 minutes.
SMCC was 18-41 shooting to post an impressive 47 points in the first half, outscoring Roxbury by 21. The SeaWolves defensive unit limited the opposition to just 22 points in the second to come away with a 32-point victory—this a non-countable contest.
UNB Saint John: W, 71-53 | BOX
The work was spread among nine SMCC scorers—Hardy, Fonseca, and sophomore forward Anthony Lobor (Portland, Maine) all with 12 points. Hardy logged a complete stat line totaling seven rebounds, three assists, and four steals in 26 minutes of work.
Saint John's Mike Armstrong and Hunter Gray totaled eight points apiece.
SMCC fell behind 8-0 off the tip to begin the game before claiming its first lead on a Regan three-pointer with 11:21 left in the first. The SeaWolves finished the half on a 5-0 run to lead by a 10-point margin. SMCC outscored its opponent by eight in the second half to secure its first victory of the year.
In a post-game interview, Head Coach Matt Richards commented, "I look forward to this tournament every year. I was able to get everyone minutes—it was a good chance for us as a coaching staff to evaluate in-game decision making and continue to gel as a unit before we move on to a challenging opponent in Navy Prep next weekend."
The men begin their season 1-0.
The SeaWolves will play host to the always-talented Midshipmen from the Naval Academy Preparatory School in their home opener on Saturday, Nov. 2. Tip-off from The HUB is scheduled for 3 p.m. LIVE STATS.
