Former Basketball Alum Atencio Martin Signs Pro Contract

ARMENIA—Former Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball player Atencio Martin (Kittery, Maine) signed a professional contract on Monday, Sept. 2 to play for BC Gyumri in Armenia. Gyumri, part of the Super League of Armenia, begins competition in the Armenia Basketball League A, promoted from League B, this 2019-20 season. BC Gyumri also participates in the Armenia Cup circuit.

Martin played two seasons at SMCC from 2013-15, one at the University of Southern Maine for 2015-16, and made his return to the SeaWolves for his 2018-19 senior campaign. During his time at SMCC, Martin accrued 1194 points (sixth all-time) and 668 rebounds (fifth all-time) to earn the star forward two first-team United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American selections (2015, 19). Last season, Martin captained the team and averaged a double-double (17.0 ppg, 10.2 reb/g) to be named Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Player of the Year.

Martin commented, “Signing this contract is surreal. I’ve never doubted I would get to this point but to finally reach it is a feeling words can’t express. I’m so incredibly grateful for the opportunity and I know it’s only the beginning of my career.”

SMCC Head Men’s Basketball Coach Matt Richards stated, “Words can’t express my excitement for Atencio reaching his dreams and playing professionally. He has worked extremely hard for this day. Not only was he one of the most talented players to ever play in our program but he was also a tremendous teammate. He is someone who viewed the little things about the game just as important as any accolade—which he amassed many. This opportunity couldn’t have happened to a more deserving individual.”

Martin leaves next week for Armenia to begin training.
