SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the year to the Midshipmen from the Naval Academy Preparatory School 82-76 in a non-conference contest Saturday, Nov, 2.

The SeaWolves outscored the Midshipmen 39-36 in the first half and began the second on a 9-0 run. Navy came back to even the score at 55 before SMCC would even the score at 64 with 6:27 left in regulation. The road team would stretch a lead on a 6-0 run and then manage the remainder of the clock to halt the makings of a SeaWolf comeback.

First-year Clay Hardy (Saginaw, Mich.) and sophomore captain Ian Regan (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) both totaled 17 points—Hardy off the dribble and Regan by way of five three pointers. Sophomore Anthony Lobor (Portland, Maine) contributed 15 points and five rebounds and first-year Pedro Fonseca (Portland, Maine) logged big minutes off the bench with five points and four assists.

Four finished in double-figures for the Midshipmen led by Trae Broadnax who dropped 22 on 8-17 shooting.

SMCC shot 43.7 percent from the floor and 39.3 percent from beyond the arc. SMCC slips to 1-1 overall.

Following the contest, Head Coach Matt Richards commented, “We were fortunate to find buckets at the beginning of the game and continued to fight hard against an extremely disciplined Navy Prep program. We let our momentum slip away near the end on a couple untimely turnovers, but pleased with our mental approach and our ability to balance the floor and compete as undersized.”

The action continues when the SeaWolves host Ben Franklin Institute of Technology ahead of a three game road slate on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Tip-off from The HUB is scheduled for 7 p.m. LIVE STATS.
