Knights conquer Seawolves with late run, 78-71

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team suffered defeat to the USCAA Div. 1 Knights from Berkeley College in a non-conference play on Saturday, Dec 7. 

The Seawolves strung together a 6-0 run late in the first half, cutting the Berkeley lead to 33-32 going into halftime. The Knights opened the second going on a run of their own, building their advantage back to eight with 16 minutes to go.

SMCC slowly cut away its deficit and would recapture the lead when senior captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) cashed in a three from the right wing. The score later would be knotted 61-61, until the Knights recorded a 7-0 run with four minutes left, to solidify their victory over the Seawolves.

Sophomore Charlie Houghton (Dixfield, Maine) totaled his fourth double-double of the year, with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Martinotti filled the stat sheet contributing 12 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. First-year Sean Bosia (Dracut, Mass) would add 13 points and four rebounds for the Seawolves.

Berkeley's Ike Sheppard scored a team-high 17 points and ripped down 12 rebounds. Julio Wallace added 11 points and dished nine assists. 

SMCC remains winless at 0-10 on the season.

The Seawolves prepare to host conference rival Central Maine Community College on Wednesday, Dec 11. Tip-off at the HUB Athletics Center is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear white in support!
