SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team split in its fall season opener with the defending Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) NHTI Lynx on Saturday, Sept. 8.
Game 1: W, 9-1 (5 innings) | BOX
First-year Meghan Johnston (Franklin, N.H.) made her first start in the circle and tossed a dominant five innings to allow just one earned run and six hits.
Backed by plenty of run support, it was Morgan Boyle (Portland, Maine) who collected three hits in four trips to the plate—adding three runs and two RBIs. The top four hitters in the lineup combined for nine of the SeaWolves' 12 hits.
SMCC scored multiple runs in each inning but the second to finish the game by way of the eight-run rule in the fifth. Johnson was credited the win; NHTI's Brianna Whitcomb suffered the loss.
Game 2: L, 11-4 | BOX
Junior Sarah Guimond (East Waterboro, Maine) made the start for Coach Magnant in the second game of the double dip. The hard-throwing righty went 2.2 innings and surrendered six earned runs. First-years Emily Chasse (Monmouth, Maine) and Emily Long (Rockport, Maine) came in in relief appearances.
NHTI led 6-0 after three innings before sophomore Meranda Martin (Richmond, Maine) scored to log the first SMCC run in the fourth. First-year Emily Lashua (Auburn, Maine), sophomore Sara Ring (Wells, Maine), and Martin all recorded RBIs in the contest.
The Lynx put it out of reach with four runs in the seventh to win by a seven-run spread.
Guimond was taxed with the loss; NHTI's Kirsten Mackenzie earned the win.
The 1-1 Lady Wolves return to action on Sept. 22 at Great Bay Community College.
