DUBOIS, PENNSYLVANIA– Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball opened its 2025 USCAA Small College World Series campaign with a 5-1 win over Penn State Mont Alto on Monday afternoon at Heindl Field, advancing to the semifinals while remaining in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Seawolves struck early, plating runs in each of the first two innings. Emily Hutchins (Kennebunk, Maine) reached on an error in the first, allowing Courtney Frohaug (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) to score, before Ariana Cross (Orrington, Maine) delivered an RBI single in the second to bring home Sarah Wilkins (Red Deer, Alberta, Canada).

Wilkins was the story in the circle, going the distance and striking out 11 batters while allowing just four hits and one run. She threw 114 pitches, 76 for strikes, and retired the side in four of her seven innings to notch her 13th win of the season.

SMCC tacked on additional runs in the fourth and sixth to keep momentum. Wilkins helped her own cause with an RBI double in the fourth, and Cross and Sloan Scotvold (Red Deer, Alberta, Canada) each drove in a run in the sixth to pad the lead.

The win improves SMCC to 29-6 on the season and sends the Seawolves to the USCAA Semifinals on Tuesday, May 13, vs TBD.
