SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team earned its third victory of the season sinking the Skippers from St. Clair County Community College (SC4) 69-61 in a non-conference game on Sunday, Nov. 12.
SMCC ended the first on an 8-1 run and outscored the Skippers by an eight-point margin in the quarter. The SeaWolves' ability to limit SC4 offensively in the first 10 minutes would prove to be the difference-maker as both teams were even in the final three quarters.
The SeaWolves leaned on first-year Emily Emerson (Topsham, Vt.) who doubled her season high point total with 26 on 11-16 shooting and a perfect 3-3 from downtown. The 5'8'' forward poured in eight in the second quarter and eight in the third, accounting for 44 percent of SMCC's offense in that span.
First-year Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) finished in double-digit scoring for the third time this season with 13. The point guard also recorded a season high eight rebounds and seven blocks. Sophomore and co-captain Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) knocked down three from beyond the arc to go along with her 12 points. The sharp shooter is 30.6 percent from three-point territory this season.
SC4's Brooke Junaud led her team with 15 points; Zhiyon Mitchell posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards.
In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Bergeron commented, "A result today against a talented SC4 team was what we needed before we dive into a three-game road slate. Playing from behind, down nine points in the second, and finding a way to get up 12 in the fourth is encouraging. Both Emerson and Ramirez have emerged as a high-low threat."
The SeaWolves improve to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in conference action. The Skippers who compete in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association, return home with a 1-2 record.

Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action continues when the Lady SeaWolves travel to Unity College to play the 1-1 Rams on Wednesday, Nov. 15, tip-off 6 p.m. SMCC is riding a 10-game win streak against Unity spanning the previous five seasons.
