Lady SeaWolves Thump Rams

UNITY, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team picked up its third straight win in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) 71-29 rout of Unity College on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

SMCC jumped ahead from the opening tip, pouring in a season high 26 points in the first quarter. The SeaWolves posted double-digit figures in each of the final three quarters and limited the Rams on the defensive end bringing their points-against average to 56.8 spanning five games this season.

All made their mark in the scoresheet led by first-year Grace Kariotis (New Gloucester, Maine) with 10 points in 24 minutes on the court. First-years Lauryn Fagan (Standish, Maine) and Priscila Berdeja (Acapulco, Mexico) finished with nine apiece—Berdeja with a season high 11 rebounds and five steals.

In a post-game interview Katie Bergeron spoke on her team's bench play, "Whenever everyone on the team scores and no one has over 10—it's a true team win. Everyone contributed but we saw some freshmen play big minutes with a focused energy to get better. I want to highlight Grace Kariotis for shooting 100 percent as the high scorer and Priscila Berdeja who continues to show her defensive tenacity with a monster stat line."

The Lady SeaWolves improve to 2-0 in conference play, 4-2 overall. The Rams rank 1-2 in YSCC standings.

SMCC looks ahead to Vermont Technical College, a conference opponent the SeaWolves carry a 12-game win streak against. Tip-off from Randolph, Vt. is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18.
