SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team completed a come-from-behind victory against the Midshipmen of the Naval Academy Preparatory School 49-46 to stay perfect in a non-conference contest on Saturday, Nov. 2.
SMCC fell behind 19-8 in the first quarter and scored just seven in the second to trail Navy 25-15 at the break. The SeaWolves cut their deficit to five points by the conclusion of the third quarter and took their first lead of the game on two made free-throws by junior captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) to make it 47-46 with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. Brett was fouled and went back to the line to make two more and extend the SMCC lead to three. A defensive stop on the other end secured the victory for the home team.
Brett logged her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards—converting 8-10 from the stripe. First-year Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) went for 10 points and 7 rebounds in 17 minutes of work.
The Midshipmen were led by Mikenzie Yim-Harvin's 22 points on 7-22 shooting. Abigail Guidry and Elizabeth Atkinson combined for 27 rebounds.
In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Stannard stated, "Despite a poor shooting performance both from the field and at the free-throw line, we took the mental approach today and found a way to continue fighting. After a few half-time adjustments, we were able to better contain on the defensive end and run our sets in half-court offense. I'm proud of the team for getting the result even without playing our best basketball."
The Lady SeaWolves move to 3-0 overall and look to stay perfect when they travel to Holyoke Community College on Friday, Nov. 8 for a 5 p.m. tip.
