SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball program held off the Knights from Vermont Technical College (VTC) 85-80 at The HUB on Saturday, Nov. 16 to earn its third Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) victory of the year.

The afternoon matinee featured nine ties and four lead changes in a game that was entertaining all the way through. The undefeated SeaWolves outscored the Knights 16-12 in the first quarter but were victim to a two-point deficit in the second, otherwise leading 41-39 at the break.

SMCC led 61-60 with nine minutes remaining in regulation before erupting for a 13-3 run to gain separation. The Knights fought their way back closing the SeaWolf lead to just two with 11 seconds left. It was junior captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) who put the game away with made free throws to make it a two possession game and sustain SMCC's perfect beginning at 7-0 overall.

Brett flushed a season-high 34 points in 39 minutes of action. She added 13 boards and seven assists to a dominant performance. First-year Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) logged 17 points on an efficient 7-13 shooting.

Vermont Tech finished three players with 24 points—Farah Mesidor, Kennedy Henderson, and Kimah Stribling.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Stannard stated, "A hard fought game by both sides, we did well to run methodical offensive sets to combat their athleticism on the defensive end. We were a bit careless with the basketball today evident in our turnover count but capitalized on shooting opportunities. Augusta on the road will be another true test."
