Women’s Basketball Logs Sweep at Can Am, Begins Season 2-0

AUBRUN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s basketball team took both games at the annual Can Am tournament hosted by Central Maine Community College last weekend Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27.

St. Lawrence- Champlain: W, 70-44 | BOX

Junior captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) picked up right where she left off as 2019 Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Player of the Year converting eight buckets for 21 points. First-year Tara Flanders (Windam, Maine) recorded a double-double at 10 and 11 in her collegiate debut and first-year Grace Fontaine (Auburn, Maine) contributed 14 to the scoresheet with eight assists.

St. Lawrence was powered by Ariane Dore’s 19 points.

UNB Saint John: W, 65-59 | BOX

The battle of the SeaWolves featured another SMCC double-double by Flanders—19 points and 17 rebounds. Flanders added six assists and two steals. Brett logged the next high score with 17 points and 10 rebounds; Fontaine added 10 points and seven rebounds, knocking down 3-8 from beyond the arc.

Saint John was led by Julia Bennett who went for 20 points on 7-16 from the floor.

On the weekend, SMCC shot 35.0 percent from the floor, 19.4 percent from long-range, and 64.0 percent from the free-throw line.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Stannard reflected, “I had big expectations of this group coming into this weekend—we showed off the work we put in during our preseason and some exceeded my expectations. I’m happy to begin the season the way we did, coming away with plenty to work on in preparation for next weekend.”

The women begin their season at 2-0 overall.

SMCC continues their non-conference slate at The HUB on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they play host to the Naval Academy Preparatory School at 1 p.m. LIVE STATS.
