Andrews, Brett Combine For 54 To Take Down Lady Moose

AUGUSTA, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s basketball team kept its undefeated streak intact defeating the Moose from the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) 69-55 at the Augusta Civic Center on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

SMCC was behind at the half 20-18 before making adjustments to erupt for 31 points in the third quarter. The SeaWolves outscored the home team by five in the fourth to secure a 14-point victory. SMCC held the Moose to 55, 13 points less than their scoring average on the season.

UMA took the edge in field goal percentage, but were limited to 10 less attempts. The SeaWolves out-rebounded the opposition by 14 and took care of the basketball with six fewer turnovers.

Junior captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) and first-year Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) combined for 78 percent of SMCC scoring and 54 points in the contest. The back court ripped 19 rebounds—Andrews recorded three blocks and Brett added five assists.

UMA’s Madeline Suhr led her team with 23 points on 10-18 shooting and pulled down 10 boards.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Stannard commented, “Last night was a great team win—we started very slow and did not shoot the ball well, but made in-game adjustments and turned it around big time in the second half. Aija continues to grow as a player for us, seemingly unstoppable both finishing around the rim and finding open teammates. Amanda was her usual dominating presence leading the team in points and supporting a surrounding cast of freshmen—it was an exciting road win for us! I also want to add how impressed I continue to be with freshman Bailey Whitney—her efficiently on the floor is outstanding and we’re excited to see her responsibility grow within the program!”

The SeaWolves jump to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play. The Moose slip to 4-2 in conference action.

Next, SMCC plays host to the Rams from Unity College on Thursday, Nov. 21. Tip is set for 6 p.m. at The HUB. WATCH on Facebook Live or follow LIVE STATS.
