SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to the #1-ranked United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division 1 Bobcats from Bryant & Stratton- Syracuse 3-1 on Sunday, Sept. 29.
Bryant & Stratton's Lyla Lionel, who entered leading all USCAA players in scoring, continued her hot start by netting the first goal of the game inside the first minute of the first half on a thru-ball from teammate Asako Ideue.
The Bobcats scored in the 22nd minute off of a corner kick and it was Lionel again 10 minutes later on a scrap inside the 18-yard box to put the road team ahead 3-0. Junior captain Callie O'Brien (South Portland, Maine) put away her ninth goal of the year with three minutes remaining before the break after sophomore captain Ryleigh Lord (Pittsfield, Maine) gathered a drop ball to record the assist.
The second half ended in a stalemate and finished by the same first half score.
First-year goal keeper Calley Baker (Jay, Maine) faced 11 shots and made eight saves.
The SeaWolves stand 6-1-1 overall and remain 3-0-1 in conference play. The Bobcats continue their unbeaten streak at 8-0-0 overall.
SMCC gets the week off and returns to the pitch on the road at non-conference Massasoit Community College on Sunday, Oct. 6. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Brockton, Mass.
