Mustangs Fall in YSCC Championship

Old Orchard Beach, ME - The CM Mustangs baseball team competed in the Yankee small college conference tournament over the weekend. 

In the semifinal match up against NHTI, the Mustangs had a 13-8 come from behind victory to advance them into the championship. The Mustangs were trailing the lynx 8-3 in the sixth before plating four runs. Brandon Gour and Jimmy Reed had back to back singles. Zach Mann then Walked to load the bases. Later in the inning, Shane Sullivan cleared the bases with a double. He was thrown out at third to end the inning. CM tacked on four more runs in the seventh to take the lead for good. Evan Eldridge led off the inning with a single. After four straight walks and a sac fly by Colton Frisbie, the Mustangs took an 11-8 lead and never looked back. 

Reed led the way with four hits and two runs scored. Frisbie had two hits and Sullivan had three RBI. 

Garret Harvey got the start on the mound with Jack Cote and Derek Roman coming in relief. Roman picked up the win. 

In the championship game against SM, the Mustangs took an early 2-0 lead. Kaleb Thompson had a two out double in the second. He later scored on a Rolando Rodriguez single. 

Reed's RBI single two batters later plated Rodriguez to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. The Seawolves scored five runs in the next two innings to take the lead for good. CM added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Stefan Lesco and another run in the eighth on an RBI double by Reed. The Mustangs lost 8-4. 

Trevor Phelps started on the mound pitching into the fifth. Craig Burnett and Jeff Meisner pitched in relief. 

"Although today was a tough one, I'm extremely proud of this program," said head coach Ryan Palmer. "We had a couple college coaches in attendance that gave both programs praise on how well played the game was and that was nice to hear," added Palmer, "Sometimes the final score doesn't really indicate how competitive the game was. This was a great bunch of kids to coach. The seniors will definitely be missed."
