SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) SeaWolves basketball programs conclude yet another successful season in 2017-18 with so many notable accomplishments by both teams and student-athletes.
Women’s Basketball
Head Coach Katie Bergeron and the Lady SeaWolves finished their 2017-18 campaign at 19-9 overall, 12-4 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action. In her second season at the helm, Coach Bergeron notched her 43rd win, improving on a .754 win percentage (43-14), and a 24-6 career conference record.
Player Achievements
First-years Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) and Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) finished with the exact same amount of points—293. Both captains Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) and Jordan Farquharson (Ryegate, Vt.) also eclipsed the 200-point total—Ruth with 235, Farquharson 211.
Brett pulled down 201 total rebounds while five-foot one-inch point guard Ramirez added 164. Emily Emerson (Topsham, Vt.) recorded her 119th career rebound in her first year wearing white and blue.
Brett swatted 42 shot attempts and Ramirez dished 97 assists, both statistics ranking fifth among conference players. Ramirez earned a YSCC First Team All-Conference selection and Brett a Second Team nod for their achievements this season.
Team Successes
As a team, the women’s basketball program averaged 66.9 PPG on 37.2 percent shooting. The Lady SeaWolves allowed 50.7 PPG on the defensive end—third fewest among conference opponents.
Highlight Wins
A 19-9 mark this season featured exciting wins inside The HUB as part of a 12-2 home record. On Nov. 30th, SMCC defeated nationally ranked NHTI 72-69 when sophomore captain Emily Hogan (Jay, Maine) erupted for 14 points on 4-7 shooting. Then again the SeaWolves defeated NJCAA Region XXI Community College of Rhode Island by a 13-point spread 78-65 on Jan. 6th and USCAA #2-ranked University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) 65-59—Brett with one of her nine double-doubles on the year.
The women entered the YSCC playoff tournament as the #3 seed and were defeated in the semifinal round by #2 UMA.
Men’s Basketball
Head Coach Matt Richards and the SeaWolves capped their fifth winning season in six seasons with an 18-10 record, 11-5 in YSCC play. In his fifteenth season, Richards coached in his 452nd game and improved to 283-169 overall (.626 win percentage).
Player Achievements
Junior captain Dylan Silvestri (Pelham, N.H.) eclipsed the #5 spot in all-time rebounding adding 275 this season to his 631 career total. The six-foot three-inch center kept the sequence alive with 142 offensive rebounds in his third year, a feat that led all United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division 1 and Division 2 players. Silvestri totaled 55 steals (T-2 YSCC) to rank #9 all-time and will finish his career with 926 points—leading this team with 411 this season (7-YSCC).
Both Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) and Gregory Trinidad (Lawrence, Mass.) broke the 300-point total as well—Cloutier with 368 and Trinidad 306.
First-year point guard Jacobee Burpee (Manchester, N.H.) led all USCAA Division 2 players in three-point percentage connecting 48.3 percent from downtown; Burpee was the constant for the SeaWolves leading the team in minutes at 27.0 per game.
The Pelham Connection, Silvestri and Cloutier, both were voted YSCC Second Team All-Conference selections for their accomplishments this season.
Team Successes
As a team, the men’s basketball program averaged 82.5 PPG on 44.5 percent shooting. The SeaWolves limited opponents to 66.9 PPG—third best among conference teams.
Highlight Wins
The SeaWolves reached the 18-win mark with big-games wins both home and away. SMCC defeated Williamson 82-65 in Pa. on Jan. 20th when Trinidad went for 26 points on 5-9 from beyond the arc. The SeaWolves hung on for a 71-68 win over nationally ranked Vermont Technical College on Senior Day Feb 10th and defeated the new-look University of Maine at Machias in the playoff quarterfinals 82-77 on Feb. 16th.
The men entered the YSCC Elite 8 Tournament as the #4 seed and were defeated in the semifinal round by host school and top-seeded NHTI.
