SMCC Athletics Celebrates Student-Athletes with Annual Awards Banquet

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department held its annual awards banquet on Tuesday, May 9 at Purpoodock Golf Club in celebration of its student-athletes and their many successes throughout the 2022-23 academic year and athletic seasons.

At the event, Seawolves Athletic Club President Eric Bruneau commemorated the traditions of SMCC Athletics; following, Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards recognized noteworthy Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) and United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) accomplishments to include:

To conclude the ceremony, SMCC Athletics named the recipients of its department awards.

Leslie Barteaux Scholar Athlete of the Year: Student-Athlete (Male and Female)
This award is given in recognition for excellence in the classroom of the highest individual GPA by a female and male student-athlete who has accumulated more than 36 credit hours.

Recipients: Emma Cousins (Softball) and Logan Burt (Baseball)

Donald Ferrante Award—Most Improved Athlete (Male and Female)
To the most deserving student-athletes who showed strong traits of determination, improvement, and commitment to their teammates.

Recipients: Grayson Soldati (Women’s Soccer) and Randy Vasquez (Men’s Basketball)

Carroll Rines Award—Sports Person of the Year (Male and Female)
To the most deserving student-athletes who demonstrated a high level of dedication and commitment to their team and the athletic department overall, image and success are strong factors.

Recipients: Tara Flanders (Women’s Basketball) and Dylan Weyeneth (Men’s Soccer)

Timothy D. Hagerman Scholarship
The Timothy D. Hagerman Scholarship award is to be given to a returning student-athlete who puts their team before themselves and is a positive member of the school community.

Recipient: Remy Levin (Golf)

John Dakin Award—Outstanding Contribution
Given to a non-student-athlete who gave of their time to promote SMCC Athletics. Someone who volunteered or gave themselves above and beyond what the expectation might have been.

Recipient: Addie LaRoche
