SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— At the conclusion of the semester, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards published the findings of the semi-annual Spring 2023 Athletics Engagement and Academic Report. The report shows student-athlete GPAs and retention rates based on United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) normal progress rules for athletic participation eligibility—a higher threshold than those standards of the College.
Spring 2023
- Total student-athletes: 121 (27% increase from spring 2022)
- Overall student-athlete GPA: 2.89 (.11 points better than fall 2022; .06 points better than spring 2022)
- Spring 2023-Fall 2023 USCAA retention rate: 90% (3% increase from spring 2022-fall 2022)
- Student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or better: 61 (50% of total student-athletes)
- USCAA Academic All-Americans: 21 (3.5 GPA or better, totaling 24 or more credit hours)
- Best team GPA: women’s volleyball (3.17)
- Best team retention rate: men’s basketball (100%)
In strategic review of the data Richards stated, “We take great pride in our student-athletes’ efforts in the classroom as well as on the playing surface. This year’s Seawolves continue to be a shining light when balancing athletics and academics. The support of coaches and the new initiative of our Academic Success Center have put our student-athletes in the best possible position to succeed!”
