Athletics Engagement and Academic Report: Fall 2021

Athletics Engagement and Academic Report: Fall 2021

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—At the conclusion of the semester, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Director of Athletics Matt Richards published the findings of the semi-annual Fall 2021 Athletics Engagement and Academic Report. The report shows student-athlete GPAs and retention rates based on United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) normal progress rules for athletic participation eligibility—a higher threshold than those standards of the College.

Fall 2021

  • Total student-athletes: 107 (3 less than fall 2020)
  • Overall student-athlete GPA: 2.78 (.18 points better than fall 2020)
  • Fall 2021-Spring 2022 USCAA retention rate: 89% (3% better than fall 2020-spring 2021)
  • Student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or better: 54 (51% of total student-athletes and 16% better than fall 2020)

In strategic review of the data, Richards stated, “A couple important notes to consider are (1) in the fall of 2020, no athletic competition took place and most student-athletes were remote learning; and (2) in the fall of 2020, the average student-athlete course load was 9.2 credits. This semester it was 13.12. The department staff is proud of the efforts made by student-athletes who continued to make full-time progress toward their academic degree programs using the online, hybrid learning model in conjunction with the return of athletics. I look forward to another successful semester in the spring!”
