Athletics Engagement and Academic Report: Spring 2022

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—At the conclusion of the semester, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards published the findings of the semi-annual Spring 2022 Athletics Engagement and Academic Report. The report shows student-athlete GPAs and retention rates based on United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) normal progress rules for athletic participation eligibility—a higher threshold than those standards of the College.

Spring 2022

  • Total student-athletes: 88 (1 less than spring 2021)
  • Overall student-athlete GPA: 2.83 (equal to spring 2021, and the best of the previous 14 semesters)
  • Spring 2022-fall 2022 USCAA retention rate: 87% (1% less than spring 2021)
  • Student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or better: 38 (43% of all student-athletes)
  • Total USCAA Academic All-Americans: 14 (24 credit hours with 3.5 GPA or better)

In strategic review of the data, Richards stated, “This year our student-athletes returned to full athletic competition, adjusting to COVID-19 protocols and a hybrid learning model. Coupled with tremendous efforts made by our coaches and support staff, our student-athletes conquered the challenge and succeeded both on the playing surface and in the classroom—I’m proud of the way they have represented the College.”
