SMCC Athletics Announces the Cancellation of Spring Seasons

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) and Central Maine Community College (CMCC) Athletic Departments have worked in collaboration with the Maine Community College System to announce the cancellation of their spring baseball and softball seasons due to safety concerns related to COVID-19.

Both athletic departments have come to the decision based on the recent landscape of collegiate athletics around the country and in consultation with similar institutions along with input from athletic governing bodies.

Associate Dean of Students and Director of Athletics Matt Richards has been in constant discussions with the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) in regards to this decision and impacts to student-athletes. SMCC and CMCC Athletics will continue to assist student-athletes through this process to advise appropriately their intercollegiate athletic experience.

Richards states, “Certainly this decision wasn’t made hastily but in support of the proactive measures and best practices being shown throughout the country by athletic departments. We feel this is the best step for our student-athletes and our institutions.”
