Seawolves Win YSCC Baseball Championship

Old Orchard Beach, ME -- Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) hosted the 2012 YSCC Baseball Championship today at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach. The Seawolves squared off against their familiar conference foe, the Knights of Vermont Technical College.

The Seawolves struck first on the scoreboard, thanks to a two-run homerun by Mike Crowley (Gouldsboro, ME). His two-run shot flew over the left field wall in the bottom of the second inning to drive in Alex Brown (Weymouth, MA), giving SMCC a 2-0 lead over Vermont Tech. Crowley finished 2 for 3 on the day, with 1 HR, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored; on his way to earning the honor of Offensive Player of the Game.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Josh Aube (Biddeford, ME) and Jason Dutton (Old Orchard Beach, ME), helped drive in two more runs for the Seawolves during a two out rally. Extending SMCC's lead to 4-0 going into the seventh inning.

Freshman Andrew Richards (South Portland, ME) led the Seawolves on the mound, and had a no-hitter through six innings before allowing two hits in the top of the seventh. He only allowed one more hit, in the eighth inning, which eventually led to one run being scored by Vermont Tech on an error.

With a final score of SMCC 4, Vermont Tech 1, Tyler Beck picked up the loss for Vermont Tech, although he was named Defensive Player of the Game for his efforts. Andrew Richards picked up the win for the Seawolves, pitching a complete game which included ten strikeouts and zero earned runs. His dominating performance over nine innings pitched earned him the honor of Most Valuable Player.

The Seawolves now sit at (19-16-1), and finish conference play on a high note by winning the 2012 YSCC Championship. The baseball team now has a week to prepare for their last game of the season, a 1:00 PM matchup with Navy Prep on Saturday, May 5th.
