SEAWOLVES WIN YSCC CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

South Portland, ME. The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team hosted the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) tournament today. The Seawolves were able to take down rival New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) in the championship game after earning a bye from the semi-final round. The Seawolves had a hot start scoring 4 runs in the first inning and that was all they needed with junior pitcher Daniel French (Richomond, VT) on the mound. French pitched a 3 hit complete game with 4 strike outs leading SMCC to a 4-1 victory. With his play on the mound, French earned YSCC tournament Most Valuable Player.

Leading the way for the Seawolves and earning tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player was freshman first baseman Zachary Horton (South Portland, ME) who went 2 for 3 from the plate while scoring a run. Sophomore outfielder Alex Brown (Weymouth, MA), sophomore center fielder Michael Calabrese (Dover, NH) and freshman Brendan Reil (Berwick, ME) each contributed a hit with Calabrese and Brown each scoring a run.

NHTI earned a spot in the YSCC Championship Game after beating Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) earlier in the day in the semi-final round. NHTI beat EMCC on a walk off hit in the 7th inning by a score of 8-7. Freshman Connor Angus earned the honors of tournament Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

With the win, SMCC improves to 22-20-1 overall and becomes the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) tournament champions. After the Seawolves take a few days off to enjoy the win, the Seawolves will host Bridgton Academy (BA) this Friday, May 3rd. This game is the first of a 3 game series for the 302 Challenge Cup with the game starting at 4:00PM.
