SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team scored 29 runs to sweep the Herons from Great Bay Community College in a doubleheader matinee on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Game 1: W, 7-6 (8 Innings) | BOX
First-year Stefan Lesco (Somers, Conn.) took the hill in game one to toss six complete innings and allow three runs, one earned, over six hits. First-year Cole Lawrence (Pittston, Maine) and senior Sean Adams (Lebanon, Maine) combined for two innings of relief work.
Great Bay held a one-run advantage going into the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Ian Westphal (Portland, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice to score Lesco from third to force extras.
The Herons put their lead-off on in the top half of the eighth but were able to manufacture. Sophomore Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) doubled to left with one out in the bottom half of the inning before first-year Colby Gunter (Nashua, N.H.) delivered a two-out single to walk it off and give SMCC the 7-6 victory.
Adams earned the win; Great Bay's Jose Soto suffered the loss.
Game 2: W, 22-12 (5 Innings) | BOX
First-year Robby Nadler (Somers, Conn.) earned the start in the second game to give the SeaWolves 2.0 innings. The righty allowed seven runs on just three hits and struck out two.
Adams, Gunter, and junior Cody Bryant (Somersworth, N.H.) all recorded three-hit games and combined for 12 RBI. First-year Peter Stauber (Cumberland, Maine) also had himself a day at the plate contributing with five RBI.
The SeaWolf offense collected 15 hits and its largest run total this season, featuring 10 runs in the fourth inning.
Adams earned the win in this one as well, Great Bay's Collin Burleigh was taxed the loss.
Great Bay's Bryce Smith hit four homers on the afternoon, two in each game, and finished with 12 RBI.
SMCC improves to 5-1 overall, Great Bay now a .500 cub at 2-2 thus far.
The SeaWolves return to the diamond Thursday, Sept. 26 when they host Central Maine Community College for the third time this season in a nine-inning affair beginning a 3:30 p.m. LIVE STATS.
