PORTSMOUTH, N.H.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team split with the Herons from Great Bay Community College (GBCC) in doubleheader action at Leary Field on Friday, Oct. 5.
Game 1: W, 18-1 | BOX
Sophomore Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) started on the bump to use six innings of no earned runs to improve on his conference-leading ERA. The right-hander struck out five and allowed just three hits and two walks before first-year Jacob Poole (South Portland, Maine) came on to throw a perfect inning of relief.
The SeaWolves held a two-run lead in the third before opening the flood gates combining for 16 runs in the final three innings, eight in the seventh.
First-year Peter Stuaber (Cumberland, Maine) continued to get it done with the bat going 4-5 from the plate. Sophomore Ian Westphal (Portland, Maine) and first-year Jack Sawicki (Freeport, Maine) each delivered four RBIs—each with extra-base hits.
Francoeur earned his third win of the season; GBCC's Tyler McKenna suffered the loss.
Game 2: L, 9-4 | BOX
Junior Cody Bryant (Somersworth, N.H.) took the hill in game two to go 4.1 innings and allow four hits, four walks, and four runs—for good measure he struck out four. Poole made his second relief appearance of the season and was responsible for five runs, all in the sixth.
The SMCC bats were kept dormant for the first four innings before coming alive for four runs in the final three innings. Although they out-hit the Herons 10-8, the Seawolves left seven stranded.
Francoeur was a perfect 3-3 at the dish, recording two RBIs—first-year Stefan Lesco (Somers, Conn.) had the other multi-hit game.
GBCC's Mike Sterritt connected for two home runs in the contest as teammate Christian Dow came away with the victory. Bryant was taxed with the loss.
The result pushes SMCC to 8-4 overall; Great Bay 5-3 as the Fall slate nears end.
