Seawolves Baseball earns doubleheader sweep to open the spring

SCRANTON, Penn.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Penn State University Scranton to open the spring season on Tuesday, Mar. 12.

Game 1: W, 17-2

In a dominating performance, this one showcased SMCC's strong offensive prowess, as they scored early and often, putting up a total of 17 runs on 15 hits. Scranton, on the other hand, struggled to get its offense going managing two runs on two hits.

Junior Liam Cooledge (Westbrook Maine) had a standout performance, going 2-5 with two RBIs, while first-year Alex Bean (Westbrook, Maine) contributed 3 RBIs. Seawolves' starter Bennett Smith (Falmouth, Maine) was solid on the mound, allowing the two runs on two hits over six innings of work.

On the other side, Luke Kirkey logged a double and an RBI, but it wasn't enough to overcome SMCC's production.

Game 2: W, 11-10

The Seawolves came out strong again in the first inning, scoring a total of eight runs to take an early lead. Their offense was led again by Cooledge's two hits and two runs. First-year Quinn Dillon (Gorham, Maine) also contributed with a key double and two RBIs.

Scranton fought back to score runs in multiple innings to keep the game close. Guy Mushow had a stood out with a home run and an RBI, while Zach Benson also made an impact with a home run and two RBIs.

On the pitching side, sophomore Gabe Aucoin (Bath, Maine) picked up the win for SMCC despite giving up eight runs in five innings. Scranton's John Jillard Jr. took the loss after allowing the 8-run first inning.

The road trip continues at Penn State University Mont Alto on Wednesday, Mar. 13. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
