SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team took down NJCAA powerhouse Northern Essex Community College (NECC) 3-2 in non-conference action on Tuesday, Apr. 2.

NECC started first, scoring a run in the third inning when Ryan Brown grounded out to first-year shortstop Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) allowing Max Lalime to score. The Seawolves responded in the fourth inning when Liam Cooledge (Westbrook, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Keblinsky home to tie the game.

The game remained even until the seventh inning when Eros Fernandez of NECC scored on a passed ball, giving his team a one-run lead. SMCC again fought back with a two-run single off the bat of Cooledge to score both Keblinsky and first-year Brady O'Lone (Fort Myers, Fl.) in the eighth inning.

First-year pitcher Bennett Smith (Falmouth, Maine) shut the door on the NECC offense in the final two innings to record the victory for SMCC. Seawolves' starter Jason Libby (Bangor, Maine) put on a dazzling performance going seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

It was SMCC's first win over NECC since 2017, and moves the Seawolves to 13-7 overall this season.
