Seawolves Drop A Close One To Eastern Maine 58-54 in Opening Game of the YSCC Tournament

Back in November, Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) beat Southern Maine Community (SMCC) 90-74.  Then, EMCC followed that up in January with a decisive 77-56 victory on their home court and finished on top of the Yankee Small College Conferece (YSCC) regular season standings.  So when the Seawolves of SMCC entered the YSCC Elite Eight Tournament as the #8 seed, the Eagles of EMCC probably thought they would have an easy route into the semifinals.  But someone forgot to tell that to SMCC.

The Seawolves came out firing and exchanged leads with EMCC throughout the entire first half.  In the second half, EMCC would lead by as many nine points, but SMCC never gave up.  The Seawolves cut the lead down to two with 35 seconds remaining in the game.  Then, EMCC's Thelbert Green (17 points, 6 rebounds) hit two free throws to extend the lead to four. The Seawolves had a couple of good looks at the basket, but nothing would fall before time expired with the Seawolves down 58-54.

Seniors Josh Mackie (South Portland, ME) and Joe Jardine (Greenville, ME) made strong contributions in their final games for SMCC.  Mackie led the Seawolves' scoring drive with 14 points including 4 three-pointers and also grabbed 3 steals. Point guard Joe Jardine did a great job controlling the offense while contributing 5 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Freshman forward Anderson Santana (South Boston, MA) had another double-double performance with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

The Seawolves finished the 2011-2012 season with a 12-18 overall record.
