Owls Nip Seawolves in Second Half

South Portland - In yesterday's USCAA men's basketball action the Seawolves took a 12 point lead into the locker room at the half but the Owls of UMaine-Presque Isle came storming back in the second to take the 72-64 triumph.

The Seawolves shot lights out in the first twenty minutes of yesterday's game connecting on 16 of their 30 shots from the field, including 4-8 from downtown. Shooting guards Grayson Waterman (Berwick, ME) and Matt Talbot (Portland, ME) each netted 10 first half points to help give the Seawolves a 37-25 lead at the intermission.

Seawolves' forward John Morgan (Sanford, ME) opened the second half with a layup to give SMCC a 14 point lead, their largest lead of the game. The Owls responded by rattling off eight unanswered points, which included two three pointers by shooter Maurice Harris. Morgan halted the UMPI run with another layup to bump the lead up to eight, 41-33, with 16:54 remaining in the game. Over the next five minutes the Owls outscored the Seawolves 10-6 to cut the SM lead to four and then back to back jumpshots by UMPI's Chase Vicaire knotted the game at 47-47. Talbot hit two free throws to put the Seawolves back on top. For the next eight minutes SMCC managed to maintain a lead that ranged from one to five points until a Maurice Harris three pointer gave the Owls a 61-60 edge with just over two minutes remaining. This was the first time the Owls were in the lead since they led 2-0 in the opening minute. In the final 30 seconds UMPI's Derek Healy scored eight consecutive points to solidify the Owls the 72-64 comeback victory.

Talbot lead SMCC with 18 points and 11 rebounds, to record his first double double in a Seawolves uniform. Point guard Jordan DeRosby (Waterville, ME) added 13 points and Waterman finished with 12.

Harris led all scorers with 19 including 5-8 shooting from beyond the arc and Chase Vicaire netted 16 to lead the Owls. Healy pitched in 14 points for UMPI.

After yesterday's game the Seawolves drop to 10-13. They will be back on the court on Wednesday when they host the Moose of UMaine-Augusta at 8pm.
