Seawolves Grab 102-92 Victory at Machias

Machias -  This afternoon the Seawolves picked up a huge win on the road at UMaine-Machias. The matchup featured the YSCC East second seed Clippers and third ranked Seawolves and it was an exciting battle for 40 minutes. Sophomore guard Matt Talbot (Portland, ME) came up big with a 28 point, 10 rebound performance to lead the Seawolves to a 102-92 victory.

The Clippers jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and stayed on top for the first seven minutes until a Ville Wuorenjuuri (Helsinki, Finland) three pointer put the Seawolves up 14-12. The teams exchanged baskets and the Seawolves were clinging to a 20-19 edge when Wuorenjuuri connected on back to back shots from downtown to give SMCC a seven point advantage with ten minutes remaining. The Clippers fought their way back and eventually regained the lead when Jorge Milo hit a jumper that put UMM up 34-33. SMCC responded immediately with three unanswered layups but a Milo three pointer slashed the lead back to two, 39-37. The Seawolves finished the half outscoring the Clippers 8-5, thanks to back to back layups by sophomore forward John Morgan (Sanford, ME), to take a 47-42 lead into the break.

Talbot hit three straight layups to start the second half and sparked a 12-3 Seawolves' run to put SM up 59-45. At two points throughout the half the Clippers were able to get the lead down to 10 and with 28 seconds remaining a Brandon Blakely three pointer cut the lead eight, 96-88. However, the Seawolves wouldn't let the Clippers get any closer than that as they rolled to a 102-92 triumph.

Noteworthy performances for the Seawolves other than Talbot were point guard Jordan DeRosby (Waterville, ME) who scored 19 points, including 10-11 from the free throw line, and Morgan who added 13 points and eight rebounds. Wuorenjuuri ended with four made three pointers for 12 points.

Jorge Milo led the Clippers with a game high 30 points and six assists while Ben Teer added 23 points, including 5-8 from downtown. Blakely ended with 20 and center Ivory Sneed added a double double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

The Seawolves (12-15, 8-4 YSCC) will be back in action on Wednesday for a YSCC rivalry matchup at CMCC at 8pm.
