SeaWolves Make It 2-0 At Can-Am

AUBURN, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College men's basketball team defeated the University of New Brunswick- St. John 83-77 in its second and final game of the Can-Am Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 23.

SMCC started the game on a made three-pointer by first-year Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) and an 11-4 run. A St. John's lead midway through the first half was ruined by another SeaWolves' offensive breakout- this one a 24-9 run to finish the half.

St. John's cut the SeaWolves' lead to one with 12 minutes remaining in the game, but SMCC continued to battle on both sides of the ball to hang on to its advantage. Junior captain John Morgan (Sanford, Maine) scored seven of his 15 points in the final four minutes of the game to help his team secure the 83-77 victory.

Cloutier led the SeaWolves with 16 points, shooting an efficient 3-4 from beyond the arch. Sophomore Chase Soares (Falmouth, Mass.) orchestrated the attack tallying 11 assists, nine steals, and seven points. Sophomore Dylan Silvestri (Pelham, N.H.) contributed with 12 of the 38 points coming from the bench.

Head Coach Matt Richards commented, "Balanced scoring was the difference-maker today. Four players scored in double figures and we held the advantage on the glass to secure the win. St. John was coming off a quality win over CMCC the night before where they shot the ball extremely well. We decided to maintain a strong half-court defense and really contest all jump shots."
