Dixon Delivers In SeaWolves' Thriller

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College men's basketball team narrowly defeated the Midshipmen of the Naval Academy Preparatory School 63-61 at the HUB on Saturday, Nov. 5 to improve to 4-1 this season.

With six minutes remaining in the game, the Midshipmen went up eight and took their largest lead of the night. The SeaWolves' captain John Morgan (Sanford, Maine) brought his team back to life, scoring eight points on four trips down the floor to cut the deficit to one with 3:27 left to play.

First-year Timothy Dixon (Plainville, Conn.) buried a three-pointer to give SMCC a two point advantage, but Navy Prep would answer with a bucket on the other end. Coming out of a timeout with five seconds remaining and the score tied at 61-61, the SeaWolves inbounded to Dixon who drove the paint and finished an acrobatic lay-up to deliver the lead. SMCC made the stop on the final Midshipmen possession and secured the two-point victory.

In a game that featured 11 lead changes, Morgan said, "We never quit. We can be down  10, down 20, or up 10, and we're still fighting until the end. We got heart. We may not have a lot of size, but we've got a lot of heart." Morgan led his team with 16 points and shot an efficient seven for 13 from the floor. Dixon finished with nine points and three assists, making two of two from three-point distance. First-year Anthony Lobor (Portland, Maine) contributed with eight points and six rebounds.

The SeaWolves out-rebounded, recorded more assists, and made less turnovers than their opponent- keys to their success over a tough Navy Prep team.
