UNIONTOWN, Penn.—The #4-seeded Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team was defeated 81-71 by the #5 Wildcats from Johnson & Wales University (NC) in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournament quarterfinal round on Sunday, Mar. 3.

In a primetime matchup that featured eight ties and three lead changes, SMCC was down by as much as 13 with 3:25 left in the first. Senior captain Atencio Martin (Kittery, Maine) and the SeaWolves finished the half on an 8-0 run to cut it to five. SMCC was able to get to the free-throw line just twice in the first 20 minutes.

The SeaWolves bested the opposition in rebounds and assists with more second chance points in the game, but the Wildcats won the second half again by a five-point separation much to do with efficient three-point shooting.

SMCC got all of its production from its starting five with three in double figures. Martin deposited 30 points on 12-19 shooting and pulled down 12 rebounds. Senior captain Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) chipped in 15 points and five assists and sophomore point guard Jacobee Burpee (Manchester, N.H.) facilitated the offense with five assists in 36 minutes of play.

The Wildcats were led by Kajuan Madden-McAfee and Robert Hobson who combined for 44 points and 11-16 from beyond the arc. As a team, Johnson & Wales converted 46.7 percent of its 30 three-point attempts.

The SeaWolves will conclude their 2018-19 season with a consolation game vs. #7 Penn State University Mont Alto on Monday, Mar. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. WATCH.
