AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team won for the second consecutive year at Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) rival Central Maine Community College, this time 67-53 on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

In a much anticipated rematch, both teams played to a lock in the first 10 minutes of action. Sophomore Anthony Lobor (Portland, Maine) knocked down a mid-range jumper to put the SeaWolves ahead for good, 18-17 with 9:44 remaining in the first. SMCC outscored the home team by 11 to lead at the break 33-22.

SMCC came out of the locker room to a 7-0 run and extended its advantage to a comfortable distance. First-year Pedro Fonseca (Portland, Maine) netted 11 of his 13 in the second half to help his team to a 34-point total. Lobor topped all scorers in the game with 17 points and eight rebounds; sophomore captain Ian Regan (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) produced a complete stat line tallying 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

Khalid Ibn led the way for the Mustangs with 11 points and five rebounds; Malik Farley with eight points and eight rebounds.

In a post-game interview, Associate Head Coach AJ Burton stated, “Last night in a hostile environment, we continued to remind the guys to play through the ups and downs and to control the controllables. We knew that in order to leave there with a win we needed to be efficient offensively and force CMCC to take tough contested shots. Overall, I am super proud of this team and we are starting to play our best basketball at the right time heading into the final regular season game and postseason play.”

The result pushes SMCC to 18-7 overall, 11-4 in conference play. CMCC suffers its second consecutive loss sporting a 16-9 overall record, 11-5 YSCC.

The SeaWolves wrap up their regular season with a conference meeting against the Clippers from the University of Maine at Machias on Senior Day Saturday, Feb. 15. Prior to the contest, SMCC will honor three graduating players for their service to the program. Tip-off at The HUB is set for 6 p.m.
