SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team dropped its second Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) game of the year 65-61 to the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College on Wednesday, Dec. 11 in part one of the “best small college basketball rivalry in Maine.”

The much anticipated meeting featured nine ties and six lead changes, the winner determined in the final minute of regulation. Central Maine converted on a lay-up to even the score at 61-61 and then another on a contested effort by Corey David to get up two. The SeaWolves were unable to match with a basket and Central Maine beat the buzzer with a dunk on the other end to secure the 4-point victory.

First-year Clay Hardy (Saginaw, Mich.) and sophomore captain Ian Regan (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) combined for 22 points. First-year guard Zachary Mickle (Billerica, Mass.) contributed with seven rebounds and four assists.

CMCC’s Saikwon Williams logged 19 points in 32 minutes of action; Matt Attard added 15 points on 6-11 shooting.

The SeaWolves made 24-74 from the field, just 20 percent from beyond the arc, but logged half of the opposition’s turnovers.

The result leaves SMCC 9-3 overall and 6-2 in league action; the Mustangs improve to 12-3 on the year and sit atop the Yankee standings at 8-1.
