Defense Continues Dominance, SeaWolves Turn Over Herons

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s basketball team earned a 82-57 Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) victory and a season sweep of the Herons from Great Bay Community College (GBCC) on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

The SeaWolves got off to a hot 18-4 start to begin the contest and finished the half ahead 21—much to do with first-year Pedro Fonseca’s (Portland, Maine) 12 points on 4-5 shooting.

The Herons started the second half on a 10-0 sprint before first-year Cameren Cousins (Wells, Maine) broke the spell with three straight layups. SMCC built a lead as much as 30 with just under five minutes to go in regulation to lock up its seventh home win of the season.

Fonseca totaled 14, Cousins and sophomore forward Anthony Lobor (Portland, Maine) both contributed 13 and combined for 13 rebounds. As a team, the SeaWolves flushed 45.3 percent of their field goal attempts and converted 6-14 from downtown.

GBCC’s George Mortimer led his team with 16 points in 37 minutes of action.

SMCC begins a new win streak and improves to 16-7 overall, 10-4 in conference action. GBCC suffers its second straight loss at 7-11 on the season, 4-10 YSCC.

The SeaWolves finish up a two-game home stand on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they welcome the Panthers from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on Timothy D. Hagerman Alumni Game. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. following the men’s and women’s alumni games.
