#2 Men’s Basketball advances with quarterfinal win over #7 ACPHS

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team defeated the #7 Panthers from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) 52-40 in the quarterfinal round of the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) playoff tournament Saturday, Feb. 24.

The home team outscored the opposition by 12 points in the first half as rookie forward Adam Savage (Skowhegan, Maine) totaled 11 of his 13 points and swatted three blocks in 16 minutes before the break.

The Panthers closed their deficit to as little as four points, 42-38, with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, but SMCC closed the game on a 10-2 run to seal its third victory over Albany this season.

Junior co-captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) scored 12 points on 6-13 shooting, and added eight rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Cayman Warburton (Worcester, Mass.) converted at a 50 percent clip to net nine points and record three assists.

Albany's Brett Richards logged a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds in 28 minutes of action.

#2 SMCC advances to the semifinal round to take on the #6-seeded Mustangs from Central Maine Community College. Tip-off at NHTI (Concord, N.H.) is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 2.
