AJ Burton will enter his eighth season as part of the men's basketball staff and sixth as Associate Head Coach. During his time with the Seawolves, Burton has helped the program to a 126-49 (.720 win%), 70-20 (YSCC) mark, three conference championships (2017, 2022, 2023), and the College's first ever team National Championship in 2022.

Previous to SMCC, Burton attended the University of Detroit Mercy having completed his master's degree in Liberal Studies and a graduate assistantship with the women's basketball team.

Burton hails from Brown City, Michigan where he began his collegiate playing career at St. Clair County Community College. In 2010, he led the Skippers to an eighth place finish at the Junior College National Tournament.

Burton later transferred to Rochester College (Rochester Hills, Mich.) where he received his bachelor’s degree in Sport Management and continued his basketball career. He was crowned a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Champion as a player in 2013. Burton was tabbed a USCAA All-American selection in 2014 and was named to the AII All-Conference and All-Tournament team in the same year.

Recently, Burton has worked summer basketball clinics to include Dartmouth, Harvard, Army and Bowdoin College, played the role of Camp Director for the Boston Celtics, and has spent time on the USCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Poll. 

In addition to his duties with the men's basketball program, Burton serves as an Advisor at the College, Head Golf Coach, and an adjunct faculty member in the Sport Management degree program.
