Stirling Signs National Letter of Intent

South Portland, ME. Sophomore Tommy Stirling (Gorham, ME) officially accepted a golf scholarship to Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) this afternoon at Southern Maine Community College’s (SMCC) Hub Gymnasium. Stirling signed the national letter of intent in front of friends, family, members of the local media and SMCC faculty and staff.

The scholarship offer came following Stirling’s performance at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championship in October.  The championship was held on the Blue Course at Penn State University in State College, PA.  Stirling entered the match ranked 2nd in the nation with a 75.2 average. He opened with an even-par 72 which placed him tied for the lead with Kris Bartling of Rochester College. During the final round of play, Stirling was able to remain focused and went on to shoot a four-under 68 to claim the title.  His total score of 140 bested second place by four shots and included 13 birdies.

During his two years at SMCC, Stirling brought national attention to the Seawolves golf program and exemplified the true meaning of student-athlete. “Tommy’s effort on the course and how he conducted himself as a student-athlete brings a great amount of respect by me and the campus community. We are very excited about his future endeavors,” stated SMCC Director of Athletics Matt Richards. Stirling will join the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University this fall.  SWOSU is a NCAA Division II program that competes in the Great American Conference.
