PORTSMOUTH, N.H.— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) golf team carded a runners-up finish at the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) championship match at Pease Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 14.
With five teams in attendance and a field of 20 golfers, Paul Smith's College fired a 336 team total to take home the title for the second straight season. The SeaWolves turned in their second lowest score of the season with a 354, one stroke better than NHTI, Concord's Community College. The University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) scored a 466 and host Great Bay Community College (GBCC) was disqualified from team scoring with too few players.
For SMCC and for the fourth time this season, sophomore Kevin Dwyer (Hanover, N.H.) scored a team low, this time with a 85. First-year Hunter Carignan (Rollinsford, N.H.) made an 87, and behind him was sophomore McKenze Coyne (Gorham, Maine) recording a season-low 90, then sophomore Seth Chim (Portland, Maine) with a 92. Also shooting a season-low was first-year Tyler Hensley (Tupper Plains, Ohio) signing off on a 97.
At the post-match awards banquet, Head Coach Ethan Wells was voted Coach of the Year as UMA received the Sportsmanship Award. Player of the Year went to Paul Smith's Taylor West who caught fire winning the match with a 77. Mike Gardner (Paul Smith's), Evan Kordalski (UMA), Taylor Post (NHTI), and Austin Delosh (Paul Smith's) filled out the rest of the All-Conference Team— determined by the five lowest scores on the day.
Wells reflected on his team's performance, "We ran into a Paul Smith's team that was really feeling it today and hats off to them. Nonetheless we battled mentally, at times getting ourselves out of trouble and bouncing back after a poor hole. All finished strong, turning in an improved back nine. It was a pleasing way to end a fantastic season."

The SeaWolves conclude their season with one first place and three second place finishes. Playing in all six matches, Carignan averaged a team-low 86.0, followed by Dwyer at 86.6 spanning five matches and Chim 89.3 through four. Both Coyne and Hensley improved on their score each time out this season; Coyne shaving 16 strokes and Hensley 14 strokes from beginning to end. For a full statistical season report click HERE.
