BRUNSWICK, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) golf team took to the links in the annual Maine Amputee Open at Brunswick Golf Club on July 13-14. Among those that attended the event were junior Robert Caron (Naples, Maine), sophomore Sam Winslow (Portland, Maine), and freshmen Albert Doughty (Gray-New Gloucester, Maine), Zach Tremblay (Sanford, Maine), and Brian Perrault (Biddeford, Maine). Each were placed separately in threesomes—some with amputee golfers.

Assistant Golf Coach John LeMieux not only participates in the event as an amputee himself, but organizes the fundraiser. The tournament attracts nationally-ranked amputee golfers from across the country and raises money to support the Amputee Association of Maine—a non-profit that supervises funds on an as-needed basis for people in need.

The SeaWolves turned in a two-day, 36-hole team score of 680.

Doughty placed first in the Junior Division, and recorded a top five finish among able-bodied participants. Winslow and Perrault finished second and third in the junior circuit.

Head Coach AJ Burton commented, “It was great having the opportunity to have some of our golfers participate in this event. Not only did it allow our guys to get together prior to the start of the season, but these were two days they won’t forget helping raise money for the Amputee Association of Maine. Coach LeMieux brought the idea to the team and we were extremely pleased with how our guys performed over the two days.”
