SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department has announced the offering of its inaugural women’s golf program to begin the upcoming fall 2023 season.
The women’s golf program will compete alongside its male counterparts in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) scheduling—a co-ed championship offering. The team will also enter stand-alone women’s events across the region that will bolster competition opportunities. Further, the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) and SMCC’s affiliate national governing body, has strategic plans to offer a women’s invitational at the highest level of competition.
Head Golf Coach AJ Burton expressed, “It’s exciting times in athletics! Even though we will remain a co-ed offering, this gives our ladies an opportunity to compete against other females in their sport across the state, New England, and amongst alike USCAA institutions. The trend started last season with Remy Levin (Bonny Eagle High School) joining as the lone female; her success has attributed to the interest of others and to the eventual offering of women’s golf next fall. Other team members joining Remy will be Sydney Pergerson (Marshwood High School) and Delaney Black (Elmwood High School). The plan is to bring in at least one more to have a full-scoring team— I’m ecstatic to get started in this new venture for the department!”
Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards commented, “I’m really excited that we will begin offering additional women’s golf opportunities in the form of a stand-alone team at SMCC. This will encourage and promote more female participation within the local community and serve as the foundation to what I hope will grow into a robust program offering within our department.”
“SMCC is always looking for opportunities to expand student athletics and other activities. We are pleased that our female golfers will have additional opportunities to compete going forward,” said SMCC President Joseph Cassidy.
