Men’s Soccer Wins Battle of the Unbeatens

Southern Maine Community College earned a big 2-1 victory over University of Maine- Machias today.  Both teams entered the game undefeated in the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC), SMCC at 5-0 and UM-Machias at 6-0.  In the most recent Coaches’ Poll released by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), SMCC was tied for ninth and UM-Machias was ranked tenth in the nation.

Both teams battled strong in the first forty-five minutes of play and went into halftime scoreless.  Then, just two minutes into the second half, junior Blais Whitney (Cornsih, ME) stole the ball from a Machias defender and scored an unassisted goal.  Whitney would score the winning goal ten minutes later off a penalty kick.  But it took a true team effort to overcome the persistent Clippers of Machias.  “This was the best ninety minutes we’ve played all year and everyone on the team contributed to this win,” praised head coach Brian Dougher.

SMCC improves to 6-0 in YSCC play and 6-2 overall.  Machias is now 6-1 in conference and 7-4 overall.  The Seawolves do not have a lot of time to celebrate the victory as they return to the pitch tomorrow to play Northern Maine Community College at 3:00PM.
