Hugues Lifts SeaWolves Over Unity

UNITY, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College soccer team came away with a win over Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) opponent Unity College in a double-overtime thriller 3-2 on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The SeaWolves jumped on the scoreboard in the third minute of the match when sophomore Harrison Charwat (McLean, Va.) finished a header on a looping cross from sophomore Gradi Lapika (Kinshasa, Congo). The Rams would even the score at 1-1 mid-way through the half by converting a penalty kick.

In the closing minutes of the first half, first-year Tristan Campbell (Parsonsfields, Maine) netted his second goal of the season finishing a deliverance out of the air from sophomore Douglas Cloutier (Berwick, Maine) to put his team on top 2-1.

The SeaWolves held the advantage through most of the second half until Unity's Will Desmaris found the equalizer with only 1:45 left on the clock sending the match into overtime. SMCC continued to bring urgency on the attack and in the second overtime period sophomore Hugues Bakunda (Lille, France) finished the game winner, again from Cloutier, giving SMCC the away victory. Bakunda and Cloutier were named Men of the Match by the SeaWolves coaching staff.

The SeaWolves now stand at 2-1 in conference play and 4-2-1 overall.

SMCC looks to extend its winning streak when the team travels to Auburn, Maine on Tuesday, Sept. 27 to take on Central Maine Community College in another YSCC matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
