Charwat Powers SeaWolves Past Unity

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College men's soccer team punched its ticket to the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Final Four with a win over Unity College on Sunday, Oct. 16. The second-seeded SeaWolves defeated the number three-seeded Rams 2-1.

Sophomore Harrison Charwat (McLean, Va.) found the back of the net near the 12 minute-mark as a result of a through-ball from teammate Douglas Cloutier (Berwick, Maine) to give the home team a 1-0 advantage that would last the first half.

Unity found its equalizer in the 65th minute courtesy of Ben Denoncour. The SeaWolves kept the intensity and continued to put pressure on the Rams defense. With time running down and the game still knotted at 1-1, Cloutier worked the ball into the offensive third and delivered a cross to the back post where Charwat was waiting to score his second goal of the game and fourth of the season. SMCC's defense outlasted the Unity attack and secured the 2-1 win.

Sophomore goal keeper Patrick Duddy (Sedgwick, Maine) tallied seven saves in eight shot attempts. He still leads the YSCC in save percentage (.849).

Head Coach Brian Dougher commented, "The team rose to the challenge of trying to defeat Unity for the third time this season. The connection between Harry and DJ worked wonders as we played. We look forward to once again returning to the YSCC Final Four weekend." Coach Dougher and the SeaWolves coaching staff named Duddy, Cloutier, and Charwat as Men of the Match.

The SeaWolves are slated to play the top-seeded South Division College of St. Joseph on Saturday, Oct. 22 in the YSCC Semifinal match in Concord, N.H. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:15 a.m.
