SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team split in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) round-robin play date on Saturday, Sept. 23, defeated by New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) and winning over Great Bay Community College (GBCC).
Game 1: NHTI 12, SMCC 7 | Box Score
Sophomore Kristen Mackenzie (Seabrook, N.H.) earned the start for the Lady SeaWolves against a hot hitting NHTI club that had scored 16 runs in two games entering play. The right-hander tossed 3.1 innings before allowing eight runs, three earned, on 10 hits.
SMCC would score in every inning but the sixth and held a 3-1 advantage after two. The Lynx piled on five runs, on four hits and two errors in the third, to reclaim a lead they would not surrender.
First-year Meranda Martin (Richmond, Maine) provided four innings of relief work but the SMCC offense couldn't string together the big inning and suffered the five-run loss. NHTI's Brianna Whitcomb went the distance to record the win.
Sophomore Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine), first-year Sarah Ring (Wells, Maine), and Mackenzie all tallied multi-hit games.

Game 2: SMCC 5, GBCC 3 | Box Score
Mackenzie was handed the ball again in game two, opposite her was GBCC's Makayla Herget.
The Herons manufactured two runs in their first at-bats. Not to be outdone, the Lady SeaWolves answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning and would later break the tie in the third to take a 5-2 lead. The Herons managed to get one back in the fifth inning before Mackenzie closed the door on a solid pitching performance.
Martin was a perfect 4-4 at the dish with a home run from the lead-off spot. Ring also provided some pop from the middle of the lineup with two hits and two RBI.
Mackenzie picked up her first win of the season in a complete game outing, allowing just one earned run and one walk. Herget, also going the distance, suffered the loss.

SMCC remains .500 at 2-2 in conference play, behind College of St. Joseph (CSJ) and NHTI—both 3-1.
The action continues when the Lady SeaWolves match up with CSJ and NHTI on Saturday, Sept. 30—this time in Portsmouth, N.H. SMCC will take the diamond at 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. in its final play-date before the fall championships on Saturday, Oct. 7 in South Portland.
