SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team split in a non-conference doubleheader with the Wildcats from Bay Path University on Saturday, Apr. 27.

Game 1: W, 6-5

The Wildcats jumped on the board first with two runs in the second inning, thanks to a single by Madisyn Vera. The Seawolves claimed a lead in the third inning scoring four runs, highlighted by a 2-RBI double from first-year Emily Hutchins (Kennebunk, Maine).

The home team added two more runs in the fifth inning on another double by Hutchins and a single by first-year Sarah Wilkins (Alberta, Canada), extending the lead to 6-2. Bay Path closed its deficit to one run, pushing three across in the seventh, but it would stop there.

Wilkins earned the win, pitching a complete game. On the other side, Isabella Ferrara took the loss going five innings and allowing all six runs.

Game 2: W, 8-3

The Wildcats started in dramatic fashion when Madison Sunderland connected for a grand slam in the first inning. SMCC responded with RBI knocks from Hutchins and first-year Delanie Perry (DeLand, Fl.) in the bottom of the inning.

Sunderland continued her strong performance with another homer in the third inning, and the Wildcats added more in the fourth and seventh innings. The Seawolves looked for a rally in the seventh when first-year Shylah Woodford (Readfield, Maine) hit a double to bring in Wilkins, but the home team ultimately fell short by a run.

Bay Path's Sunderland earned the complete game win; first-year Jaida Case (Machias, Maine) took the loss for the Seawolves, spreading 15 hits over five innings.

The results move SMCC to 16-12 on the season.

The Seawolves round out their regular season in a home doubleheader with the Lynx from NHTI on Sunday, Apr. 28. First pitch in South Portland is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
