Lady Seawolves Fall to Knights, 61-53

South Portland - In this afternoon's women's basketball action the Lady Knights of the Community College of Rhode Island were able to hold on for the win, despite fouling out two starters and only having four eligible players for the final 2:36 seconds of the contest, as they defeated the Lady Seawolves 61-53.

Lady Knights' leading scorer Lyric Artis scored three consecutive layups in the opening four minutes of the game to give the Knights a 6-0 lead, a lead that the Seawolves would not overcome at any point during the contest. CCRI built up an eleven point lead, 30-19, with 2:26 remaining in the first half but two made free throws by Seawolves' forward Jaimi Poland (Skowhegan, ME) would cut the lead to single digits. Despite a tough defensive effort by SMCC to close out the half, Knights' shooting guard Jesse Ossian drained a three pointer at the buzzer to shift momentum and leave the Seawolves chasing a 12 point lead at the break.

In second half action the Lady Seawolves were able to foul out two CCRI starters and outscore the Lady Knights 32-28, but commiting thirteen turnovers and shooting 0-11 from the three point line doomed the Seawolves chances for a comeback.

The Lady Seawolves were led by forwards Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME), 10 points, seven rebounds and Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA), 11 points, six rebounds.

Ossian led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 7-14 from the floor.

With this loss the Lady Seawolves are now 11-8 on the season while remaining 8-3 in conference play. They will be back in action with a conference game on Wednesday night at home against Unity College at 6pm.
